Liudmyla Kolosovych
A Ukrainian writer, actress, director, translator, crisis manager
Lyudmyla was born on September 9, 1963 in a village of Bulbasivka in Donetsk Region. Strangely enough, in those days there were still Ukrainian schools in villages in Donetsk Region. A little girl was attending one of those schools. A future actress spent her childhood surrounded by the Ukrainian steps and luscious orchards where she would hide among tall sunflowers and corn fields to feed blind kittens discarded along the railroad by some folks. In 1979 that girl from a Donetsk village with a talent for singing began her studies at Dnipropetrovsk State Theater School as a student at the acting department. She started her professional career in 1983 at Lviv Children’s Theatre where she was a leading actress having played all major parts of the theatre till 2004.She received an honorary title of ”An Accomplished Artist of Ukraine” in 1996 at a young age of 33.From 2005 to 2009, Lyudmyla worked as an artist of the highest category at the Drama Theatre of the Western Operative Command which she succeeded into renaming into Lviv Drama Theatre named after Lesia Ukrainka. Having a number of acting accomplishments on her record, Lyudmyla decided to get a degree as a theatre director at Rivne State Liberal Arts University. With her extensive background in acting, directing and teaching, Lyudmyla worked as an artistic director of Lviv Drama Theatre; a professor of acting at Ivan Franko Lviv National University where she also authored a course in acting; a professor of acting at Kyiv National University of Arts and an instructor of acting at Mariupol College of Arts.Since 2014, she has staged performances at different theatres throughout Ukraine.In 2019, Lyudmyla organized a theatre of her own named «Solo».On March 16, 2022, shortly after the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Mariupol Drama Theatre, which at that time served as a shelter for civilians, was brutally bombarded by the Russian forces. Lyudmyla Kolosovych reacted to the tragedy with an address published by the daily national newspaper Day: «Listen to me, “brothers”! I will never forgive you, never! Orks, you will not succeed in destroying our Ukrainian culture, even if you destroy a building of the theatre, if you kill actors! We have genetic memory; we have deep roots! We will get reborn, we will grow again and again on our Ukrainian soil no matter how hard you, bastards, try to destroy us…”On May 6, 2022, Lyudmyla Kolosovych, an Accomplished Artist of Ukraine, was assigned as an acting artistic director of Mariupol Drama Theatre which was evacuated into the Carpathian Region.It’s in the evacuation where Ukrainian Theatre of Donetsk was born. The shows have been staged only in Ukrainian, and during this short period of time the theatre has established cooperation with the theatres of France, Germany, Moldova, Poland, Slovakia and Romania. Lyudmyla Kolosovych is a crisis manager who successfully transitioned Russian-speaking theatres into the Ukrainian path: first, in Lviv, then in Donetsk Region.Most prominent acting roles: Tom Sawyer from the musical “Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain, Stekha from “Ivan Stodolya” by Taras Shevchenko, Yadzia Gusykivska from “Taras” by Bohdan Stelmakh. Most prominent directing works: “Song of the Forest” and “Possessed” by Lesia Ukrainka, “The Dog in the Manger” by Lope de Vega, “Christmas Dream of a Horse” by Ostap Vyshnia, “Marussia” after the poem “Marussia Churai” by Lina Kostenko, “Christmas Caroling of Donetsk Region” after the works of Panteleimon Kulish, “CRY OF THE NATION” - about life and perils of Vasyl Stus.
