The International Day of Charity is observed every year on September 5. It is an official United Nations international day established to raise awareness of the importance of charity, volunteering, and humanitarian assistance, and to encourage individuals, organizations, and communities to support those in need.

We have just returned from our American tour, and we would love to gather with you to share our impressions, stories, and memories from the journey, our meetings with Ukrainian communities, and the many new people we had the opportunity to meet.

The United Nations officially proclaimed September 5 as the International Day of Charity through General Assembly Resolution A/RES/67/105. The first observance took place on September 5, 2013.


Why September 5?


The date was chosen in honor of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who died on September 5, 1997. She dedicated much of her life to helping people living in poverty and difficult circumstances. In 1979, she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in addressing poverty and suffering.


What is the meaning of this day?


The UN emphasizes that charity is not limited to financial donations. It also includes:


- volunteering;

- helping people facing difficult circumstances;

- supporting humanitarian initiatives;

- the work of charitable and community organizations;

- bringing people together around important social issues;

- demonstrating solidarity and compassion.


The United Nations encourages communities to mark this day through charity events, fundraising campaigns, auctions, educational programs, and other community initiatives.
