The Ukrainian American Youth Association (UAYA / CYM) is a Ukrainian youth organization established in the United States in 1949. From its earliest days, CYM has been dedicated to raising a new generation of knowledgeable, active, and responsible members of the Ukrainian community while preserving Ukrainian language, culture, history, and traditions. Today, CYM in the United States brings together 28 branches in 12 states and maintains connections with Ukrainian youth organizations in other countries around the world. The organization provides children and young people with opportunities for spiritual, intellectual, cultural, educational, and physical development. Throughout the year, CYM branches organize educational and cultural programs, artistic activities, sports, theatrical performances, choirs and dance groups, Ukrainian holiday celebrations, leadership development programs, and community events. Summer camps hold a particularly important place in CYM life, giving young people an opportunity not only to enjoy time together, but also to deepen their knowledge of Ukraine, develop leadership skills, and build friendships that last a lifetime. CYM is a community where Ukrainian identity is preserved, strengthened, and passed on to future generations. It is a place of friendship, education, Ukrainian culture, and active community life—connecting Ukrainian youth in America with Ukraine and with Ukrainians around the world. Ukrainian Christmas Nativity Play
For the Ukrainian American Youth Association (CYM) in St. Petersburg, Florida, preserving and passing Ukrainian Christmas traditions to the younger generation is an important part of their mission.
Fifteen young CYM members have come together to create their own theatrical production of a traditional Ukrainian Christmas Nativity Play (Vertep), combining the traditional Christmas drama with beautiful Ukrainian carols. The children not only perform the roles, but also work together to recreate the atmosphere of Ukrainian Christmas through music, characters, and live theatrical performance.
This year, the young CYM performers are embarking on their second annual Christmas tour throughout Florida with their production. They will present the Nativity Play in different cities and Ukrainian churches, giving communities the opportunity to hear traditional Ukrainian carols and experience a Christmas performance created and performed by the children themselves.
For these young performers, this is more than just a theatrical production. It is an opportunity to learn, cherish, and preserve Ukrainian culture far from Ukraine, passing its traditions on to the next generation. Through their young voices, Christmas carols, and Vertep, Ukrainian Christmas continues to live and flourish in Florida.
